Great managers set themselves apart from bad managers when they know how to deal with nonperformers. They act quickly, without spite or anger – because they genuinely care for the person. Great managers fire people faster than bad managers. They know when a job is and isn’t the right fit for someone, whereas bad managers may only lower the bar for the individual, yet once doing so, need to lower the bar for the rest of the organization.
