Description
This course covers key features and settings used to optimize the Windows 8 system for mobile computing and general system performance. Wireless networking and remote connectivity options are discussed along with optimal use of power plans to automatically help save power. The topic of network troubleshooting is also covered, including Windows 8 network management, configuration and diagnostic tools and utilities. Connecting remotely to a corporate network is an essential requirement of the mobile worker, or the IT administrator who will often have to access the corporate servers from remote locations to deal with routine or emergency issues. Secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections are supported in Windows 8 and can be configured using a number of communications and authentication protocols – this course details the available configuration options and covers the newest VPN technology, VPN Reconnect.
In terms of system optimization and performance monitoring, the course discusses Windows 8 Event Viewer; Application, System, and Security logs; Group Policy settings used to configure event log behavior; forwarding and collecting events using the WinRM and Wecsvc services; and event subscriptions. You also learn how to enhance system performance by configuring virtual memory, using ReadyBoost, enabling write caching, adjusting visual effects, scheduling disk defragmentation and optimizing disk space, configuring Data Execution Prevention (DEP), configuring power management, and managing startup programs and services. Also covered is keeping your Windows 8 system up to date using the Windows Update system and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), which offers centralized management of Windows updates in a corporate environment.
